Leadership I am a motivated teacher and I love my students at Doss High School, where I teach Business classes. It is through my love of teaching that I am passionate about ensuring all children have the best opportunity to meet their life’s ambitions. I began my first four years of teaching with positive energy and a love of my career. I enjoyed teaching Career Choices class for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students at Frost Middle School. Although Frost Middle school was a persistently low achieving school that presented many challenges, after two years I felt like I was making an impact on my students. I use strategies that make learning meaningful and show positive impact on student learning. For example, last school year I started using a web-site called Edmodo.com and integrating technology more into lessons in my classroom activities. As I integrated technology into my lessons I found students were more engaged in classroom activities. Edmodo.com also provides methods where students can communication with teacher’s afterschool through messages or collaborate with other students as needed. If a student is absent they can go to the web-site and get their classroom assignments and activities to prevent them from getting behind. Edmodo offers a method where-by I can a student is given a quick assessment/quiz, the student can send the quiz, and get instant feedback on their grades. I noticed that students were eager to get the correct answers and after the test we shared results as a class. Parents are also able to log-in to Edmodo.com as a parent and check their student’s grades and/or progress. “Technology can facilitate engagement in ways which are difficult to meet otherwise,” (Kearsley and Schneiderman, 1999). I invest my energy to discover ways to help other teachers and student do more, despite challenges in students’ lives. My classroom radiates with energy so that I can energize and engage my students. If I am not excited about my subject how can I expect my students to get excited?? It is this through this excitement that I urge positivity and respect daily in the classroom. I am a part of a professional learning community (PLC) where we work to collaborate and reflect on teaching and teaching strategies. As part of our meetings we often compare data and support each other to enhance student learning. At Doss High School our professional learning communities maintain high quality learning activities for students as we aid in making them college and career ready. Education is a unique experience for each child that walks into a classroom. I believe each child should and grow academically and socially. Students want and need structure; but, as adults we also need to prove our students with secure, caring, and stimulating environments.
