Learning to Live a Fulfilled Life by Understanding Inevitable Death Image being at war and not being able to leave. Every time a soldier finishes the number of required missions and tries to leave, the lieutenant raises the number so they cannot go home. Time after time, the required number is reached and raised again. The soldier is being forced to be at war against their will.This is the struggle that the main character goes through in the book Catch-22 by Joseph Heller.This is one of many experiences that changed Yossarian to learn and make the right decisions. In the book Catch-22, the theme of "inevitable death" teaches Yossarian to live a more fulfilled life by learning more about himself. The first major event that Yossarian had to endure was another soldier's death named Snowden. Yossarian watched Snowden die and even though they were not that close, Yossarian felt closer to him after that moment. Snowden died slowly of hypothermia and his death was very graphic. The other soldiers believed that Yossarian is insane and they did not welcome Yossarian into their groups of friends (Green). Since Yossarian did not have anyone to confide in, he always retreated back to the hospital when he had a problem (Heller 54). The hospital acted as a safety net for Yossarian because he could run away from his problems. Avoiding his problems by hiding at the hospital became a pattern for Yossarian because he was always worried someone wanted to kill him (Heller 70). In conclusion, being in the war allowed Yossarian to form new relationship that caused him to developed bad habits. He learn to run away from his problems, but from this, he learned that the life that he wants is not being
