Ella Aerts Period 5 Your Inner Fish Discussion Answers Chapter 1 - Finding Your Inner Fish Neil and his colleagues focused on rocks from 375 million years ago because fossils from 360 million years ago were amphibians with necks and four legs. However rocks that are 380 million years old looked more like fish we know today, with fins and scale. So, it made sense that they would find the transitioning fossils in rocks that was 375 million years old.
Joshua T. Brooks Professor Patty Chaffin English 111 8 February 2023 Blackfish Blackfish is a documentary filmed in 2013 directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite. This film was produced following the lawsuit against SeaWorld where people have died while training with killer whales. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) ruled that it was dangerous for humans to be in the same water as Killer Wahles in captivity because the only deaths by whales have come from them being in captivity, there have been no reported deaths by whales that live in the wild. This shows that you do not know how animals will react when you get them into the wild. Gabriela Cowperthwaite shows all of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos in the film.
In the 1950s and 1960s Edgar Zwilling and John Saunder did experiments on chicken eggs to uncover how the skeleton is formed. They discovered that two patches of tissue essentially control the development of limbs. Neil explains to us that the patch of tissue that makes the pinky side different from the thumb side is called the zone of polarizing activity or ZPA. Later, geneticists working with flies discovered a gene they called hedgehog. This gene controlled which end of the fly was which.
The trappers are shooting back at them. Although if you look closely, the trappers are on the strength side of the frame which is the right and the natives are on the weak side which is the left side. Which side is the real dominant? The simplest form I can explain is this, have you ever been in a situation where two people want two people want to fight and they say back in forth “You better walk away”, “don’t mess with me”, “If you come closer, I will hurt you.” The irony in that situation is that in reality both persons do not want to fight, but if they show some sort of weakness, then they have lots the fight already.
For my extra credit book report, I chose to read “Your Inner Fish” by Neil Shubin. Neil Shubin is a highly regarded paleontologist, and is extremely qualified to have written this book. Shubin studied at Harvard university and earned his Ph.D. in organismic and evolutionary biology in 1987. He also studied at Columbia University, as well as Berkeley. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2011.
Finding Fish is a memoir written by Antwone Quenton Fisher. Fisher recounts several aspects of his life and incorporates them into a well written novel. Act one, Ward of the State describes several challenges Fisher faced during his childhood. One of those challenges was Mizz Pickett’s abuse towards him. One particular form of abuse he endured was physical abuse.
Your Inner Fish essay In Neil Shubin’s Your Inner Fish, he takes his readers on a journey throughout time, teaching how marine animals inevitably ended up on land. Shubin starts his book by describing how himself and other paleontologists found a missing piece, that showed how animals transitioned from water to land. With this discovery it allowed paleontologists like Shubin, to see transitions that could possibly link certain species of fish to humans. A major change between fish and humans is the use of limbs and its ability to use its limbs to take itself out of the water and away from the dangers within.
Its body is slim and egg-shaped shaped in cross section. The corner of the mouth spread out past the eye, this is why it’s called the largemouth bass. (Bailey, et al., 2004; Boschung, et al., 2004) Young largemouth basses eats zooplankton and insects that is in the marine.
Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s Blackfish (2013) and Louie Psihoyos’ The Cove (2009) both use music and sound effects to reinforce and compliment the visuals, keep the audience engaged, and highlight conflict, as well as employ interviews and archived footage to add a degree of credibility to their films and persuade the audience to sympathise with their cause. Both documentaries focus on animal rights activism, more specifically Blackfish is centred around the captivity of killer whales at SeaWorld, whereas The Cove addresses the mass dolphin slaying in Japan. Both Cowperthwaite and Psihoyos use music and sound effects in their documentaries to reinforce and compliment the visuals. For example, at the beginning of Blackfish, a recorded 9/11 emergency call complements a visual transcript, giving the
As a secular person who takes an interest in science, I have always been fascinated by the academic field of evolutionary biology. Because of this, it should come as no surprise to anyone that the book I chose to review is entitled Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5-Billion-Year History of the Human Body. Written by Neil Shubin, this piece aims to outline the origins of humanity, as well as present a plethora of compelling pieces of evidence for the theory of evolution. He does this by reviewing scientific discoveries in areas of comparative anatomy, genetics, and the examination of fossils. Interestingly enough, he also integrates some of the most basic senses that we possess, such as sight and smell.
Sometimes, one has to go through hardships to achieve success. This happens in the memoir, The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. Jeanette goes through many obstacles with her parents and siblings. Her dad is an alcoholic, and her family is poor and always moves around. She grew up with little food, and little wealth, but somehow earned success.
In an evolutionary biological sense, mimicry can be defined as a similarity of one species (the mimic) to another (the model) as a protective mechanism for either one or both species, against another species (the signal-receiver or the audience), typically a common predator of both species. The stimulus occurs as appearance, behaviour, sound or scent. The model is usually another organism, with the exception of automimicry. For prey species, mimicry strategies evolved as an adaptation against predators within their environment. The selective action of a signal-receiver drives the evolutionary process.
Directional selection means that natural selection is in favor of one extreme or another. An example of directional selection is that there is a green and red types of beetles. The predator in the area only likes green ones, this is a disadvantage for the green beetles. Another example, there are white rats and black rats. The predator, which is an eagle, the rats hide in mud; The eagle is able to see the white rats and eats them, that is an advantage to brown rats.
The simplicity of the cartoon does a fine justice to offer an insight on the intricacy and the visibility of the segregated social groups in our society. The cartoon elucidates the partitioning of different groups based on power, resource, and status with those who encompass the elite group, those who encompass the unjustified and underrepresented groups, and those who encompass the intermediate group that either oscillates towards one side or remains stagnant and satisfied with the status they already occupy. The big fish serves as a paradigm for those civilians occupying the elite group. The members in this group, according to Miller, establish the hegemonic society and attain the greatest influence in determining the culture’s overall outlook
The following is the case study of a male client, Antwone Fisher, a temperamental young black man with a violent history who is serving in the U.S. Navy. Antwone Fisher, a twenty five-year-old man, suffering from a covert behavior due to physical, sexual, and psychological abuse by Mrs. Tate at the foster home during his childhood. The rough life he had as a child caused him to have a violent temper; after getting into a fight with a fellow sailor, Antwone’s commanding officer orders him to go to psychiatric treatment. Where he meets a psychiatric who attempts to get him open up, but Antwone is at first extremely resistant and afraid to tell the truth about his past. Through a process of discovery, Antwone opens up and revels that he was verbally,
