The History of The University of Oklahoma
The legacy of The University of Oklahoma started the moment, the first president David Ross Boyd stepped out of the train. In Norman,Oklahoma, the year was 1892 and the construction started immediately upon arriving. The reason The University of Oklahoma was created was when Governor George Washington Steele and the Oklahoma Territorial legislature wanted to establish three universities. They decided that one universities should be at Norman,Oklahoma. Thus began the construction of The University of Oklahoma and its legacy. He is credited as a founder of OU. He was a soldier and served as the first Governor of the Oklahoma Territory. He also is credited for instituted Oklahoma’s first public system and establishing Oklahoma’s first universities. One of those universities was the University of Oklahoma. He died at the age of 83, on July 12, 1922. The university’s first president was David Ross Boyd. Born in 1853, He grew up in Coshocton, Ohio. He obtained his doctorate degree from the University of Wooster. He became the university’s president in 1892 and ended in 1908. One of his most famous projects was planting over 10,000 reportedly 18 months on the job and this led up to having a campus nursery. One of the biggest obstacles for the newborn university happened on, January 6,1903. When the university’s first and only building burned down, burning with it many early records of the university. Even after the fire, construction began immediately on a new building. Several towns nearby were trying to convince them to move the university’s location to their towns. Still persistent President Boyd and the faculty weren’t dismayed and decided to stay in Norman and shortly after the university was up and running again. Last year the university achieved a new record for their summer enrollment almost 9,000 students enrolled for classes. The university adopted their mascots, Boomer and Sooners from their nickname, Sooners. The school colors are Crimson and Cream. The school has extended from just education. They have a big and famous basketball, football , and other athletic programs. In basketball, they are in Division-1 in the NCAA and are in the Big 12. Their football program is also in Division-1 in NCAA, they have won seven football national championships and produced five Heisman Trophy winners. OU has produced some very notable people. Such people as , Carl Albert , former Speaker of House. Pat Bowlen, Owner of the Denver Broncos. NBA player for the LA Clippers, Blake Griffin. OU has grown tremendously since it opened the doors. The university has over 350 organizations and opened offices and buildings for new degrees. Such buildings like the Health Sciences Center, the College of Law, the A. Max Weitzenhoffer School of Musical Theatre, the Ou Office of Technology. OU continues to develop with the current time, never seems to stop adapting. They have more campuses than just their main one in Norman. They have a campus in Tulsa,Oklahoma. Which is home to OU-Physicians-Tulsa and the School of Community.
