Have you ever wondered why some laws are passed but people don’t follow them? Shouldn’t the government ask the people before passing laws? One law that has been disputable over the decades is to forbid marijuana. The use of marijuana should be legalized since it has medicinal value, the unreliability of prohibiting marijuana can be eliminated, and its side effects are much less than other legally used products. Marijuana is a very good source that has medicinal value. Medicinal marijuana has proven to help with Depression, Cancer, AIDS/HIV, and treats Glaucoma and Migraines. Forbidding marijuana creates underground black-market people to thrive. For a teenager, buying marijuana is easier than buying cigarettes because they easily purchase it from dealers. Finally, it is the teens who get arrested for smoking marijuana and not the underground black marketers. Shouldn’t it be the other way around? If legalized, authorities can focus on the real criminals that are getting away with corruption while innocent people are getting caught and placed in jail for smoking marijuana. Furthermore, new technology and other methods have to be used to legalize marijuana. Instead of alcohol breathalyzers, a marijuana breathalyzer should be invented. When people get caught with driving under the influence of marijuana, then their license should be suspended. Marijuana users should be reminded that they could only smoke in their houses and not outside. Marijuana should only be legal for medicinal purposes. If one gets caught without a medical, prescription a warning or a fine should be enforced. These are some steps Canada has to take to legalize marijuana. Aside from these counseling and teaching of the advantages and disadvantages of marijuana should be done in schools. Propaganda, bill boards, advertisements, commercials on TV and etc. are ways that the young people can be taught. Teens should be given the opportunity to lead groups and teach them what they have learnt about marijuana. In addition, a comparative study between cigarettes and alcohol as opposed to marijuana should be done and statistics taken by the students.
