Legendary Aussie rock band ‘AC/DC’ is one of the biggest bands is music history, conquering the industry worldwide. Formed in 1973, they have gone to create some of the most recognisable riffs and songs of all time, still popularly played today. But they weren’t the only ones who were thriving at this point in time. During the 70’s, rock and metal bands appeared everywhere becoming the most listened to style of music during this decade. We look at another Australian rock band known as ‘Rose Tattoo’ that was formed only three years later in 1976 and compare the similarity in the elements and characteristics between these two bands to see how rock music at the time sounded. This rock anthem launched the band into international success, with the producers of this song and album having worked with AC/DC. As most rock and pop songs, ‘We Can’t Be Beaten’ is played in 4/4 time and at an allegro tempo to match the message and feel of the song. This song incorporates grunge guitar that plays a repeated riff throughout the verse, using power chords. But rather than clear accents on each note/chord, it rings a little and blends in with the following chord, for the first part, then the second part, known as the tail of the riff, uses predominately short notes that are cut off quickly. A second guitar then joins in on the second repetition of the riff, with ringing chords at a higher octave. This song has a definitive beat with drums playing throughout the whole song, as well as beginning the opening with drums for the first two beats, the anacrusis.
