Leisure Time In The Great Gatsby

762 Words4 Pages
The “Roaring Twenties” or the “Jazz Age” was a time period of economic richness. In the movie, The Great Gatsby, there is dramatization of aspects of life in the 1920s that we learned about in class and read about in the textbook. Some noticeable features I noticed included their leisure time, the new technology, the style, the emphasis on marriage, and their distinct music of this age. With the shortened workweeks from seven days to five days, the people were left with more leisure time. In the movie, they all went to town when it was hot out and they stayed in a hotel. They also have many parties. Gatsby is the host of the parties because he has a big house and many friends. They would attend these parties for fun just as people would do in real life. When Daisey and Gatsby were younger, there was a flashback to when they went on a picnic together. Picnics were another common activity that people in the twenties would do to pass time. In this time, everyone wanted the newest and most popular technology. Some desired technology included the automobile and the phonograph. George wanted a car in order to head west with his wife and was willing to buy a used one. The phonograph was a device that allowed individuals to listen to music at their house and have their own copy of the disc. It was used multiple times, while gatsby was in the pool, when Daisey and Gatsby were dancing in the big ballroom, and when Nick first met Gatsby there was one in the background near his desk.
