STEINER HOUSE BY ADOLF LOOS.
• INTRODUCTION:
Adolf Loos (10 Dec 1870-23 Aug 1933) was an Austrian Architect. By the beginning of 20th Century the word “Functionalism” came into being that used for purely practical purposes without an artistic eye. Loos was influenced by Industrial Revolution. By the evolution of Industrial revolution, he wanted to explore the new methods and means of materials and functionalism. So, he wrote essay ‘Ornament and Crime’ in which he said, As ornament is no organically related to our culture, it is also no expression of our culture. The reason behind this was that he wanted to enhance the economic condition of the Austria.

The art and popular culture in the shadow of Adolf Loos.
Similarly, the lack of ornament results in reduced working hours and increased wages. Ornament is wasted manpower and therefore wasted health.
• PROJECT:Steiner house,1910, Vienna.
Steiner house is located in the suburbs of Vienna. Loos used volumes to create tripartite façade with the curved roof because at that time, he was not allowed to make more than floor so, he created arched tin roof which contains two additional floors giving the structure austere.

He used exposed material for example he used Stucco façade like most of his other buildings. Loos used the stucco for its functionality and similarly, stucco façade creates a smooth, unornamented and white surface . While, he used the exposed material in the house because, For Loos, urban living takes place in the interior of the house.
• ANALYSIS:
If we look at the facades, they have windows in symmetry because, he wanted to keep exterior simple and plain for the people who are looking this house from outside because he wanted to design the house for the people who are going to live inside the …show more content…

From the We see that facade are almost symmetrical but we look at the centered access via small porch the halfway opens to the right with an ascending staircase following the English houses. If we analyze the section, the idea of privacy he kept not only by creating the irregular windows but also by creating different floors e.g for public space he created basement etc.

If we look at the street façade the grand staircase was built in front of door . The reason behind this was the privacy. So, that person sitting inside the house can look who is coming into the house.

When we analyze the front elevation there is large window on the top.This room was for painter, he gave the window for light and view for painter.

Steiner house was built in 1910, if we look at Villa Muller,1930.After twenty years he added ‘Raumplan’ by creating different levels and variations under one ceiling.

CONCLUSION:
According to Loos, Each volume has the size according to its own role. His architecture was based on the rigour of function. So, in my project I’m working on circulation spaces with function by arranging different volumes and interior structures and
