On a calm afternoon, Lennie looked at the river one last time before unexpectedly being shot in the head. My client, George, killed him. Yes, this was tragic :however, my client had a reason. George and Lennie were best friends almost like brothers. They protected each other's lives and reputation. Many would asked, “Well, why would he kill his best friend?”. I will tell you why,he did it to protect Lennie. “And George raised the gun and steadied it,and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie’s head. See your honor and jury, Lennie accidentally killed a young lady named Candy, who was the owner's son Curley’s wife. She was very friendly to Lenny and she had fluffy hair. Lennie loved fluffy things and as a result touched her hair. He did not realize his strength and as a result, Lennie killed Candy innocently. When George found out what happened, he knew that others who worked with them would look for Lennie and harm him. George and Lennie knew each other since they were kids. According to George, “Him and me was both born in Auburn. I knowed his Aunt Clara. She took him when he was a baby and raised him up. When his Aunt Clara died, Lennie just come along with me out working.Got kinda used to each other after a little while (37).” This tells me that if it was not for George, Lennie would have been abandoned because he would have experienced being mistreated for being mentally disabled. There is yet another reason why George had to take Lennie’s life. George knew that the society did not treat persons who were mentally disabled with care or respect. No one would fully understand the mind of a child in someone like Lenny. There was a time when George stated. “I used to have a hell of a lot of fun with ‘im. Use to play jokes on ‘im cause he was too dumb to even know he had a joke played on him. I ‘ had fun.Made me seem God damn smart alongside of him.
