“I guess we got him”(Steinbeck 97). In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Lennie, one of the main characters, just kicked Curley’s wife. When George finds out what Lennie had done, he has to tell Candy to tell the other, so when they found out they were all ready to go after Lennie. They wanted to find him and make him have a painful death, so George is faced with a hard decision. He has to watch Lennie go through a long painful death that Curley wants to do to him or he has to end Lennie’s life quickly and mercifully. The novel shows that mercy killing is a way to show compassion to the person you love, by act of putting them to death painlessly. George has always been responsible for Lennie, so it was the right thing to shoot Lennie because George felt he was protecting Lennie. As a young kid Lennie wasn’t very bright, so George promised Lennie’s Aunt Clara he would take care of him. After Lennie about got killed in Weed, George hopes, Lennie has learned his lesson and will stay out of trouble, but he doesn’t. Curley’s still upset because Lennie made him look weak in front of all the workers, so Curley wants Lennie to have to suffer and George isn’t going to see Lennie suffer, Curley’s unbearable death. Then they think Lennie has Carlson’s shotgun so Curley says, “When you see him don’t give him no chance. Soot for his guts. That’ll double him over”(Steinbeck 97).
