1. A man falling asleep, pondering aimlessly at midnight. A sudden knocking is hear from his door that startles him. He whispers to himself that it is simply a late visitor, not anything else in order to keep himself from being scared.

2. The man recalls that this happened in December. He explains his despair, as he was still grieving for the love of his life, named Lenore.

3. The man is startled and terrified by every little sound in his home, so he keeps repeating to himself that the rapping is simply some late visitor there to visit him.

He stood there staring into the darkness for a short while. Many thoughts passed through his head, questioning and fearing what that tapping could have possibly have been. Yet, it was silent and dark still, the only noise was him whispering the word “Lenore” and an echo that repeated back to him.

6. The man then turns back into his room, only to hear the tapping again, but louder. He tells himself that it is simply something tapping against his window because of the wind. But he is still quite nervous and seems to be saying this purely to convince himself that it is a natural noise.
7. He opened his window to be surprised by a raven that stepped into his room. The Raven took no time to perch himself atop his chamber door, on a statue of Pallas, the goddess of wisdom.

8. The Raven had a stern expression that caused the man to smile. He asked the Raven, why he was here at this time of night, describing it as “the Night’s Plutonian shore.” The Raven responded simply with “Nevermore.”
9. The man was surprised that this bird could talk, even when the word was not very relevant to the question asked. Poe then speaks with the audience to say that “we” have never heard of a creature of any kind, let alone a raven, to sit above a person’s chamber door with a name like
