Did you know a person's maturity level has effects on relationships, even fictional ones? In the novel Susan by Jerry Spinach, two lead characters, Leo and Susan, initiate a relationship with one another. Spinach was able to magnificently write about the complications with Susan and Leo's brand new relationship. Leo Butler, the novel’s first-person narrator, struggles with Susan and the entirety of their relationship on account of his maturity state. Leo, unable to handle a communion with Susan, lets it go to ruin just because of the student body's neglect towards Susan and his inability to balance his problems. But he lies about which one he would choose. For Leo, it became a very complicated thing, whether he would have to choose or not. Leo was being shunned along with Susan for another stunt of hers. Many of his peers avoided him, which is when Kevin helped him realize that he would have to choose. This just shows Leo's inability to choose and balance both things because he was afraid of what would happen.Furthermore, Leo is seen capable of choosing but is too fearful to answer. Butler was confused about his whole situation with Susan and decided to ask for some advice. Senor Saguaro asked him which one he would choose, and Leo pretended to be confused. Later, realizing whom he would choose, he became aware of the desire to want both. This continues to show how Leo acted towards Susan, his weakness of not being able to choose which later affected his relationship with Susan since he would try to balance both things but it wouldn’t work out in the end.
