Leo Max Frank In the 1880’s to 1960’s, 4,743 people were lynched, out of those 1,297 Caucasians were lynched. One of them being Leo Max Frank, an American Jew, he was born in Cuero, Texas on April 17, 1884. His family moved to Brooklyn, New York where he graduated from Pratt Institute in 1902. Later on he attended Cornell University to study mechanical engineer and was hired as a testing engineer. Leo was in search for a job and decided to move to atlanta where his uncle lived. Frank was hired at the National Pencil Company in August 1908 and became superintendent in September 1908. He met Lucille Selig after his arrival in Atlanta and married her on November 1910. In 1912 Frank was president of B'nai B'rith, a Jewish fraternal organization in Atlanta. Unfortunately his career came to an end when he was convicted for the murder of Mary Phagan a 13 year-old girl, who worked for him in the Company. He was lynched on August 17, 1915 for a crime he didn’t commit. The murder of Mary Phagan was discovered on August 26, at 3:00 in the morning, by Newt Lee, the watchman of the factory. The physical evidence was not discussed and the murder notes were not presented. The most important of all was the testimony of Jim Conley, which was not mentioned to the grand jury. He was arrested for trying to hide a shirt he was washing that seemed to have blood stains on it but he said it was rust. Detectives made him write the murder notes and he spelled ‘night watchman’ as ‘night witch’ officials were convinced he wrote the notes, but he kept denying.
