One of the first American-born conductors to received worldwide fame was Leonard Bernstein. Louis, his birth name and a name that his grandmother love, was born on August 25, 1918 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Interestingly, instead of calling him Louis, his family always called him by the name of Lenny or Leonard. It was age of 16 when he officially decides to denominate himself as Leonard. As a shy and sickly child, Leonard was full of motivation and found inspiration everywhere. He was ten years old when he first got the opportunities to played the piano when his Aunt Clara stored her tremendous piano at his place as she went through a divorce. It was when leonard was chosen to be accepted in the master class in conducting where he met Serge Koussevitzky, who became a figure of a father to leonard and encourage leonard’s belief in the significant and power of music.
In spite of Leonard Bernstein’s passion and intelligence, he doesn’t have a real job, but for a while he did take many odd jobs, for example, transcribing music- just one to name. Surprisingly, Leonard with luck on his side, he was offered a job at New York Philharmonic to be an assistant conductor.
On November 14, 1943, was the day Bernstein becoming a star. It was at nine A.M when Bernstein got a call to take place of the symphony’s guest conductor because he has fallen ill. Bernstein convinced by Rodzinski, who recommended Bernstein to conduct in the replacement in the first place, gather up his courage and conductor successfully during the concert. Not only that, Leonard amazed his crowd and his players, and overjoyed applause implored the newspaper company, The New York Times, to publish an article about the astonishing performance Leonard have conducted. Although Leonard is really talented, there was rumors about his sexuality that he was homosexual being spread. Mitropoulos, Leonard’s mentor, became worried about the rumors and advised him to marry a woman to extinguish the speculations and secure his career.
