Leonardo da Vinci, also known as the “Renaissance Man”, was born in Vinci, Italy on April 15th, 1452. There is not much that is known about his childhood, except that he was an amazing artist even when he was a young boy. Up until the age of fifteen, he was raised at his father’s house. He then was an apprentice to Andrea del Verrocchio, and stayed with her for ten years (Getlein, 143). While staying there, da Vinci started to work on his artistic skills and create a lot of his work. His drawings are considered to be in the Italian High Renaissance period, in which there are several other great artists. However, even though there were several talented artists, da Vinci seems to be the one with some of the more famous and intriguing art work.
Da Vinci is most widely known for his painting the Mona Lisa. There are many different things that make this painting very rare. The Mona Lisa is da Vinci’s most known piece of art for several reasons; the uniqueness of the medium and media he used for the painting, the intensity of the soft look in the painting, and his portrayal of the woman looking towards the camera with a faint smile on her face.
