Leonardo Da Vinci Leonardo Da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452 in Anchiano, Republic of Florence, Italy. His father was a notary and landlord, and his mother was a peasant. Because of the mother’s social statues Da Vinci’s parents did not get married. Da Vinci was the only child that the couple shared. However, he had a total of seventeen step-brothers (History.com Staff. “Leonardo da Vinci.”). Shortly after his mother married an artisan, Leonardo was sent to live on his father’s family estate with his uncle and grandfather. In the estate he was tutored and comprehended reading, writing and arithmetic. During his stay the family requested that da Vinci made a brilliant 16-foot-tall equestrian statue, in bronze, to respect dynasty founder, Francesco Sforza. Some time around 1495 Ludovico Sforza appointed Leonardo to paint a 19 by 27 feet tempera and oil mural on plaster, for the refectory of the city’s Monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie. The painting was based on an occasion in the Bible where Jesus invited his 12 apostles to his last dinner.
