The most important lesson that I have learned about the book, Night by Elie Wiesel is everyone has the ability to be cruel and selfish. Anyone has the ability to be both cruel and selfish because when someone exhibits selfishness you are being cruel to the people around you. Everyone has the ability to be cruel because when we face difficulties and hardship we think about ourselves first, we believe what we want to see or hear, whether it's true or not and everyone has the ability to be or feel threatened by anyone. In times of need and hurt any human tends to put their own needs and safety before anyone else's. Many people are very biased and oblivious to the many problems this world faces to benefit them. In the Milgram Shock Experiment the teacher for one case knew what he was doing was hurting the experimental fake student but he still continued to do it because he said he was simply ¨following directions.¨Milgram noticed how people would rather keep going and follow his orders rather than anything negative happening to them. He explains,”There is a propensity for people to accept definitions of action provided by legitimate authority” (Milgram 1974). This is significant because it shows how even when he knew what was right he continued to withhold the experiment for the benefit of himself and others. Another example of this is In the film ¨The pianist¨, when the germans were first trying to isolate the Jews the people of Germany still put up signs saying no jews allowed even when they knew that it was wrong. This reflects how even when certain Germans felt pity for the Jews they still allowed their fellow people to do this to these poor innocent people. They knew if they tried to help them or even seen providing anything for them they would also suffer
