The book Dear Marcus has many lessons that can be applied to life. As we get older, we develop more experiences. Dear Marcus is a memoir about getting through difficult struggles as we develop. Jerry McGill, the author of the book, was shot when he was younger. When he got older, he wrote this memoir to reflect on the life lessons he learned. Dear Marcus teaches the valuable lessons of forgiveness, appreciation, and persistence. First, Dear Marcus teaches the concept of forgiveness. Forgiveness is a difficult idea to achieve all throughout life. I admire Jerry McGill’s ability to forgive the person who shot him. Throughout life, people do not appreciate the people in their life. This especially evident in my life when I was younger. Until I grew older, I did not realize how much my Mom has sacrificed for me. My mom has sacrificed many things in her life, so I could attend college and have an enjoyable life. This relates to Dear Marcus because, like me, Jerry didn’t appreciate the people close to him until he was older. This book teaches the lesson of appreciation. Finally, Dear Marcus demonstrates the lesson of persistence. Jerry McGill is successful because he persisted through his struggles. I have had difficult struggles throughout my life. Without being persistent, I would have not been determined to make it through my struggles. This also applies to my life at Gannon. College is difficult. Whether that includes difficult classes, or personal struggles, it is vital to make it through these struggles.
