I am writing this recommendation letter at the request of Samantha Mercado who is applying for the Resident Assistant position. I was lucky enough to have Samantha as a resident and suitemate this year in Stuyvesant Hall. Over the past semester, I am proud to say that I have seen Samantha grow as a student and find her place at Hofstra University. Samantha is one of the most focused and driven individuals I have ever met.
This was where I first developed my multitasking skills to oversee and coordinate four clinical research studies. My strong communication and interpersonal skills enabled me to meet crucial deadlines and work efficiently with physicians, nurses, pharmaceutical sponsors, and study monitors. I strive not only to be a great employee and team player but also to serve and positively impact my community, especially the medically underserved. For more than five years, I have volunteered over 1,000 hours, and most recently, I serve through the Lestonnac Free Clinic and Access OC organization as a Spanish interpreter. As a bilingual Spanish-speaking nurse, I hope to help my community by breaking down the language barrier between patients and the healthcare team in order to ensure the accurate continuity of care.

I have worked with Tony in the Medical Emergency Room in the Veteran’s Affair Hospital for more than eight months. I chose Research College of nursing Accelerated BSN Program because of the reputation Research has for training skilled, well prepared nurses. I have had the opportunity to get to know Maria Vazquez this year at Futures High School while teaching her American History. In that little amount of time, she has demonstrated a great work effort and I was honored to have the privilege to write this letter of recommendation. Maria is a student that works really hard on anything that she sets her mind on. She is very diligent in her studies and she is always willing to ask questions if something does not make sense which is a trait of a humble person.
Being in the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) class with Ms.Pennington is always interesting. We attend class every morning during the week from 9:00am.m to 11:30am. The main thing that we work on is all the procedures we need for the residents. But we also work on how to keep the resident safe, and comfortable. Being in the CNA class helps us move forward in the medical field.
Nevertheless, I applied to the University of Texas at Arlington’s nursing program and was accepted in Fall 2014. That opened the doors to countless opportunities for me to find my spark. Through my lectures and clinical rotations, I was taught that being a nurse meant ensuring the safety of every patient and working arduously to maintain their quality of life. With that principle in mind, I practiced my skill as a nursing student on every unit that I was assigned to.
My voluntary efforts in teaching children about healthy life habits and serving the homeless developed my patience and communication skills that are essential for a nurse practitioner. I have decided to become a nurse practitioner to help aid those who are in need and be helpful to people who can only speak Spanish. Although I have only been a Nurse since age thirty six; the medical field has been a major impact and part of my life for as long as I can remember. My journey in the medical field began as a Nursing Assistant in long term care. After several years working as a Certified Nursing Assistant, I decided to go to Practical Nursing School. I worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse in long term care and hematology/oncology outpatient clinic. As I continued to grow within my profession I began to realize the immense amount of gratification I found and thought the sky is the limit.
