Martin Luther King Jr, one of the greatest speakers for the Black civil rights movement, He had written many great works in his time. Two of his pieces that stand out is “Letter from Birmingham Jail”; and the speech “I have a dream. In the speech "I Have a Dream" by Dr Martin Luther King was spoke to civil rights activist and civilians, in front of the the lincoln memorial. On the other hand in the “Letter from Birmingham” was a letter wrote by Dr Martin Luther King jr in the Birmingham jail. This Letter was in response to 8 clergymen that criticized him in a newspaper for protesting racism nonviolently.
MLK was a very powerful writer and speaker. He wrote many articles and did many speeches. His “I Have A Dream” speech and his “Letter From Birmingham Jail” were probably his two best. In this writing I am going to compare these two articles with their use of Logos and Pathos. Dr. King did a better job in his “I Have A Dream” speech than his “Letter From Birmingham Jail” because he used more and better examples of Pathos in his speech.
The clergymen doubted the ideas of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. but in his candid letter, he explained that what the clergymen have heard is only a facet of this argument and that there is a legitimate reason which caused Dr. King and his people to begin protesting and boycotting. In the letter, “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, Dr. King explains the reasons that led him to support the peaceful, nonviolent protests. Dr. King depicts what they needed to look consistently and the psychological toll it took against African American families, which is a prime case of tenderness. Logos is demonstrated through recorded occasions were the law was not like it was in the Holocaust. Logos is additionally demonstrated when King depicts the contrasts between an equitable and vile law, for instance if a law benefits just a few society and damages the entire, it isn't a decent law.
The right to fight Martin Luther King Jr. faced many difficulties when he visited Birmingham, but one he did not expect to face was the discrimination of his fellow clergymen, who stated that his decision to travel was unwise. King responded to their comment with the “Letter from Birmingham jail”. A well written piece which was eloquently written and geared to effectively prove to his peers that he deserves and has the right to be in Birmingham, having a profound effect on his audience due to his expert use of pathos, ethos, and logos. In the letter from Birmingham Jail, Martin Luther King Jr addresses his audience by defining what qualifies an action or law to be just and unjust. He describes a just law as a “code that squares away with the moral law or the law of God” (King). Then he describes the unjust law as being “a code that is out of the harmony with the moral law” (King). Kings definitions compare well with the dictionary definitions because both agree that just laws are based on a moral code. He uses the strategy of examples and counter examples in order to define both of the words and give his audience a clear understanding of their meaning.
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy” (King, Jr.). Martin Luther King Jr. exceeded this “measure of a man” during his civil rights acts as a strong soldier in a very volatile time. During this time of “challenge and controversy” King made himself heard in his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. In some of his civil rights acts that occurred in Birmingham, resulted in him ending up in jail. During his time in jail, he wrote his also famous “Letter From Birmingham Jail.”
“We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped and robbed of their dignity…”(King 263). The speech, “I have a dream” by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was given on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to non-violent protesters for equal rights for African Americans. In King’s speech, he utilizes pathos to build a relationship between his black and white audience. This is evident through his references to both black and white children and the history of slavery which appealed to the audience members of the older generation.

We can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities.”
