Margaret J. Wheatley once stated, “Without reflection, we go blindly on our way, creating more unintended consequences, and failing to achieve anything useful.” Unless we know what or whom we have done wrong, we can’t prevent ourselves from continuously making that same mistake. Personally, I feel like this quote connects with the readings we have done over the past two weeks. In the article, “Is this how discrimination ends?,” it explains that if people will reflect on the stereotypes they make they can change them. As humans, it is absolutely impossible to know everything that will hurt a certain person’s feelings. Even though the previous statement is true, we can still think before we say things. In the story, Devine stated, “ There are a lot of people who are very sincere in their renunciation of prejudice. Yet they are vulnerable to habits of the mind. Intentions aren’t good enough.” As I have watched the world around me, I noticed that Devine is completely correct. From the five entries of “Letters to a Freshmen,” I got reminded of a lot of stuff I already knew and also found some helpful hints to get me through my first year. I learned that the best food at Wagoner is during breakfast time. Also, I learned that I need to write or type down nearly everything my professors say. The most important thing I learned was this, “Don’t get discouraged if you make a few bad grades here and there.”I tend to get very discouraged if I score very low on a test or assignment.
