Being a minority is a valid fear in the eyes of many people. Fear being imbued through minority happens due to the fact of racial tension already happening in the works of literature pertaining to the different racial aspects , hate crimes, and interracial marriages becoming more prevalent in our society. Throughout literature, “Whitewashing”, has become a huge problem in Young Adult genre. White washing is when in a book or film is based around an african american, asian american, or hispanic descent but the cover features someone that is caucasian. The story “Liar” by Justine Larbalestier is one of the most famous books that caused the most racial tension due to white washing. This causes problems with racial tension because many books are based around caucasian males or females & if there is a story about african american people it is usually based around someone who has to deal with drug abuse , alcoholism , poverty , or is not very well educated. Works of art is taking a role in our society today. How the are portrayed leaves a big impact on the public. Ever since February 26, 2011 when the 17 year old african american teenager Trayvon Martin died , hate crimes have happening more frequently. All over the news the media has been portraying things like, “Black Lives Matter”to show how the authority and government does not care about the lives of our african american people. Lately , an abundance of cops are being arrested for shooting unarmed black men and also police brutality. This shows the unrealved racism our country has which means that people have always felt the feeling of hate towards our african americans, but are just now expressing them. In June through July 15th 2013, 96 % of 18-29 year olds approve of ‘black-white’ marriages as opposed to 4% of americans in 1958. However , 13 % of americans still do not approve of interracial
