Liar Soldier Temptress Spy, is a non-fiction book, written by Karen Abbott. It takes place before and during the Civil War. The Civil War began in 1861 and ended in 1865. This book mainly focuses on the important roles that women played in the Civil War. Especially focusing on four lovely, intelligent, and sneaky women named Belle Boyde, Emma Edmmondson, Rose O'Neal Greenhow, and Elizabeth Van Lew. I would like to begin my book report with my own personal favorite character, Emma Emmondson. Emma Emmondson was raised by a loving mother and a father that could care less. In her career of being a spy, she created a cipher that most people could not understand. She was so well known and respected, that many of her spies were volunteers. Rose is well known for saving the majority of the Confederate soldiers in the Battle of Bull Run. Rose discovered that Union soldiers were going to surprise attack their military. She was able to send a letter to President Jefferson Dowis, giving the Confederate military two extra days of preparations. This battle was very brutal. People sliced heads, carved noses, ears, and testicles for souvenirs, put wounded soldiers on trees to practice aiming at hearts, and burned bodies. An estimated 4,500 men were killed on both sides. But all thanks to Rose O'Neal, the Confederates celebrated a victory over the battle. Rose was also well known for her beauty. It came natural to her to draw men in. She often slept with high ranking officials, to get information out of them. She had the honor of being a democratic politician and President James B. Canon's advisor. The difficulty was finding enough men to replace the ones who fought so hard and lost their lives. Soldiers could be as young as thirteen. Most of them would fight until their death. In the battle zone, it was very brutal. Many soldiers would take bones from the enemy and make jewelry out of them. They would wear those necklaces, with the pride of killing the enemy. When in battle, they would kill until one side surrendered. The prisons that the enemies were put in, were just pure torture. They were not fed correctly, abused, and in some cases killed.
