Box 1 –
The College of Liberal Arts at Temple has been a great conduit for providing opportunities for my intellectual and professional development. First and foremost, I feel extremely privileged to be part of Temple’s CLA Honors Program due the outstanding faculty, both teaching and administrative. I again feel lucky to have been exposed to several fantastic clubs and organizations, such as the Temple Economics and Political Science societies, that pertain to my fields of study. I’ve also been afforded possibilities to attend lectures given by prominent academics and scholars, in particular the talks given by Professor Joseph Schwartz on political theory. Viewing societal inequity from both perspectives has broadened my understanding for the need for social activism, especially political activism, to create systemic institutional changes.
In 2016, I held a fellowship with NextGen Climate, a nonprofit organization concerned with climate change and other environmental issues. While the crux of my duties with this organization revolved on disseminating information about political candidates who pledged to address the problem of climate change and the problems that stem from it, I was also tasked with familiarizing college students on issues such as environmental racism and global health inequality, assisting in registration drives for first-time voters, and participating in neighborhood clean-up projects.
During this past election cycle, I also canvassed and volunteered for Bernie Sanders’ presidential nomination campaign during the democratic primaries and did the same for Hilary Clinton during the general election. They were both candidates I viewed as committed to pushing for positive social change, notably racial and gender/sex equality and economic class
