There is a new rival in the grocery store industry, and the rapid growth of the country may be the cause of the decline in local Farmer’s Markets. The German based global discount supermarket chain, Lidl has been reported to be on a rise lately in the United States, and the sporadic growth of the company, may result in the shoppers changing where they choose to shop for produce. Lidl opened their first store in 1970 in Germany, and now in 2017 they have 20, 000 stores in 27 countries. From the moment shoppers walk under the bright and vibrant yellow and blue sign, and enter the store, they are immediately exposed to the low prices. Large advertisements quickly let customers know that Lidl has the lowest prices to offer. On the company’s website, they refer to themselves as having “High quality. Low prices. Hassle-free shopping that gets you in and out.” Many shoppers say that company definitely has a way of living up their reference of low prices. In the company’s ad for the week of November 16 through November 22, Salmon is on sale for $4.49, which was originally $6.49. The company also offered black angus chuck roast for $3.99, originally prices at $4.99. Sweet potatoes can be found in Lidl store for $0.49, celery for $0.59, French beans for $1.49, clementine’s for $2.39, and boneless skinless chicken breast with rib meat for $1.59.
