You lie; They lie; We all lie, but secrets are not always remained untold. In the play, The Crucible, Arthur Miller demonstrates the theme of the truth will eventually come out, your lies will eventually catch up to you. Specifically, people believe lying with a good cause is excusable, but it will eventually make things worse. The Crucible takes place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. During the era of McCarthyism, Salem is fictionalized with witchcraft through witch trials to justify the crimes being made. The play focuses on John Proctor, a white married Puritan, who was accused of adultery with a younger woman named Abigail which impacts his relationship with his wife, Elizabeth. In the play, Mary Warren accused John Proctor of associating with the devil himself. Specifically, Marry Warren in reply to Parris says,"My name, he wants my name. “I’ll murder you,” Proctor says, “if my wife hangs! We must go and overthrow the court,” he says! (Miller 91) In other words, this means that Mary is implying that Proctor tried to make her sign the devil's book. Through the phrase, "He wants my name" signifies that he is, in fact, the devil. Significantly, this is important because it demonstrates the lens of a voice by Mary Warren telling the truth about Proctor. This shows how Arthur Miller showed these two themes throughout the play, The Crucible. The themes I argued is that the truth will alway come out and that even lying for a good cause is a bad decision. The theme of the truth will eventually come out by Mary Warren explaining that Proctor has something to do with the devil since she claims that Proctor made her sign the devil’s book. Also the theme of lying for a good cause is a bad decision was demonstrated in the play by Proctor denying that he had an affair with Abigail. From his point of view, he lied to protect his reputation and his marriage with Elizabeth. The message I can convey about the world is that you should not lie out of of good cause because the lie may still hurt people. For example, Proctor lied to Elizabeth about committing adultery with Abigail, he did because he wanted to protect his reputation and his marriage with Elizabeth. Overall, this is important because this can relate to the real world by the themes on lying and the truth.
