Hea Yeon Paquit Mrs. Friedlander English 11-Period 9 14 November 2014 The Crucible (1) “...do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many...believe only after careful observation and analysis…” (Sutta 1). Just because everyone talks about something such as a rumor does not mean that it is true. This is shown clearly in The Crucible by Arthur Miller through the witchcraft accusations. The accusations are coming from Abigail and some people who disagree with her accusations and know she’s lying, Danforth, Parris, and the other authorities are unwilling to believe the claim that Abigail and the other girls are lying because of Mary Warren and John Proctor’s poor credibility, to protect their own position, reputation, …show more content…

Throughout act three, Mary Warren is seen as a witch whose spirit came to court to torture the girls. Proctor on the other hand does not attend church on Sundays, he would rather stay home and tend his crops. “...I see no light of God in that man. I’ll not conceal it.” (Miller page 62) He admits that he does not favor Reverend Parris and does not think that he is a man of God. Which is why he does not attend church on Sundays. Since the Puritans are very religion based, when Proctor admitted that he does not attend church every Sunday, Danforth saw it as a sign. A sign that he is working with the Devil. Just as Danforth worked hard to get the position as the head of court, Parris had to put in a lot of effort to build up his reputation and he does not want to put all that to waste. If he feels that someone is trying to go against him and is threatening his reputation, he will do anything to get rid of them. So when John Proctor and Mary Warren came to court in attempt to expose the truth about Abigail and the other girls, Parris saw it as a threat. Throughout the court trials, Parris is seen right beside Danforth, to try to convince him that John and Mary are making up
