The Great Gatsby told by Nick Carraway it is about Jay Gatsby, a man who has come from nothing to achieving great wealth by lying to innocent people like Nick. Gatsby's one desire is to be with the Daisy Buchanan, who is already married to Tom Buchanan. In The Great Gatsby a realistic fiction novel by F Scott Fitzgerald characters wear a mask to hide their wrongdoings when Tom has an affair, Jordan lies about a car she left out in the rain, and Gatsby lies about his real business. Tom Buchanan wears a mask to hide his unfaithful relationship with his wife. Nick goes to Tom’s house for dinner with Daisy and Jordan Baker. Gatsby has very extravagant parties that many people from New York attend. However no one knows how Gatsby can afford all these parties and how he got the money he did. Gatsby meets Nick at one of his parties and offers to take him to lunch. Gatsby’s work partner Wolfsheim starts to talk about work related things but Gatsby quiets him down quickly “oh, no, he exclaimed this isn’t the man!”(Fitzgerald 75). Gatsby wears his mask to hide his illegal work and the way he got his money. Gatsby quick quiets Wolfsheim because he doesn’t want Nick to hear about his illegal business and think bad of him. Gatsby also doesn’t want to get in trouble with the law and hiding his business from others is the best way to avoid getting caught. This is how Gatsby wears a mask to hide his past and present illegal dealings. The characters in The Great Gatsby are very untrustworthy. Almost all of them are wearing a mask and hiding something from each other. Tom has an affair with many different women and tries to hide it from Daisy. Jordan’s dishonest personality makes her lie to many different people. Gatsby stretches the truth about how he got all his wealth and status. In conclusion Nick was right about the East being a place of careless and dishonest
