Liesel Meminger, the main protagonist of the novel, The Book Thief, could see without a question that her younger brother, Werner, was now sideways and dead. She must fight through her depression and make it through the dark times of World War II. Then she meets her new
‘family’ and calls them Mama and Papa. Liesel later learns how to read from her Papa who made it extremely simple to her. Liesel also meets many other people, such as Max, a Jewish man that was hiding from German Nazis.

So, to help Liesel, Papa decided to teach her how to read. What Papa did to help her learn to read, was he taught Liesel the entire alphabet, letter by letter. When Max Vandenburg was being hidden by the Hubermann family,
Liesel helped him by reading the books to him. She was the light in Max’s darkness. She brought happiness to the tragedies of his experiences. He began to feel safe with the Hubermann’s because of Liesel’s optimism. Liesel learning to read had opened up a completely new world of stories, which had helped her through difficult times. Reading was truly the light in her darkness. While everyone was sleeping on October,1943, bombs fell on Himmel Street. During this air raid, Liesel was in her basement writing in a book Max had given to her. After it was all over,
Liesel emerged from her basement and had witnessed the dead bodies of Mama, Papa and Rudy, a friend of Liesel’s, on the ground. People always have to face hard situations like Liesel,
