In the Book Thief, Zusak uses Liesel to illustrate how tough circumstances can build a person. To begin the novel, Liesel was on a train heading towards Himmel Street where her foster parents Rosa and Hans Hubermann were waiting. Being very nervous, Liesel when she arrived, she didn’t want to bathe nor talk. She didn’t do anything
At the start of the book. Liesel is nine years old and due to her mother being sick, she’s given up for adoption. Liesel is then taken in by her foster parents, Hans Hubermann and Rosa Hubermann. On the way to 33 Himmel Street, which is where the Hubermanns live, Liesel’s younger brother died. “With one eye open, one still in a dream, the book thief -- also known as Liesel Meminger -- could see without question that her younger brother, Werner, was now sideways and dead.”
In 1787, seven key figures known as the founding fathers in United States history came together and wrote the US Constitution. These men were George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, James Monroe and Benjamin Franklin.(Kettler) They decided the republican form of government would allow for the best outcome in the United States. With these intentions, they planned for the more educated, which in this time meant more wealthy, to have more influence on the decisions being made. The way that they laid out the voting system was to listen to the states decisions but if the electoral college, composed of more educated people in society, disagreed with their decision then they had the right to overturn the
Liesel was enjoying the books so much that she stole nine books throughout the novel, Liesel did not know any better. She knew what she was doing was wrong, she even got punished by her parents but that did not stop her from stealing more books. Another character that changed throughout the novel is Rudy Steiner, he made decisions that almost got him in trouble like for example The Jesse Owens Incident. Jesse Owens was an inspiration to Rudy; Death says : He smeared the charcoal on, nice and thick, till he was covered in black. Even his hair received a once over.
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, was a novel about a young girl named Liesel; who felt abandoned by her mother and by the death her brother. Throughout the book, the author creates the tone by causing the reader to feel sorrow for Liesel, because she is being constantly abandoned by characters through the novel. Thievery is one of the main points in the story. The meaning of thievery in The Book Thief can be taken literal or as a symbol. Having felt abandoned all her life, Liesel could state that her childhood was stolen from everyone around her.
Liesel has realized she must respect the man who was the reason for her and her entire families suffering. She has realized she officially has lost her home, that she is completely isolated from the community. “It was quite a sight seeing an eleven year old girl try not to cry on church steps, saluting fuhrer”(Zusak 115). After losing all of these emotionally wrecking things Liesel learns and understands she needs to keep going forward. She refuses to give up she although times are rough manages to think, it could be worse.
Liesel, known as the book thief to the audience has a distinct passion for books and how much they mean to her. Stealing book after the book becomes a hobby for the young girl whose love of books is fostered by her foster father, Hans Hubermann. As Hans teaches Liesel how to read and write they develop an
A main reason Liesel develops into the character she is by the end of the novel is due to the individuals she meets and her relationships with them. When Hans Hubermann becomes
An important role model in Liesel’s life is Ilsa Hermann. After seeing Liesel steal a book at the book burning, she gives her the ‘window of opportunity’ (Zusak, pg. 155) inviting her into her library and sharing her own love of books with Liesel. The reader eventually learns that Ilsa is still mourning the loss of her own son many years before. Ilsa takes Liesel into her care after the tragedy of the bombing raids that results in the death of Hans and Rosa leaving Liesel traumatised and
Growing as a Character Every event in our lives happens for a reason, whether it is to learn from our mistakes or to gain experience from them. In Markus Zusak's novel “The Book Thief,” Liesel Meminger uses her experiences with living in the 1940s to learn life lessons and experience first hand the many terrible things Hitler is doing to people around her. She learns how to deal with the many obstacles that are thrown at her. Liesel grows as a character by following her step-father’s footsteps in being a kind and generous person, going through childhood with her best friend Rudy, and being aware of what is going on around her by learning from Max.
In the book, the book thief many characters stand out to me but one that really stood out to me the most was liesel Meminger. Liesel is a young girl who comes to live with hans and rosa hubermann, her foster parents. There are many events that occur during the duration of her new foster parents. Shortly before world war two liesel and her new family move to Molching in 1939. While driving to their new house location liesel's younger brother werner dies unexpectedly.
The words in those books changed her life. She knew not how to read before she had come to live with her foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann. Liesel loved books so much, that she stole them. She read them no matter what they were about. She found a deed respect for these words in these books.
At first, Liesel is illiterate, but when she steals her first book at her brother’s funeral, and is abandoned by her mother, she turns to something she
One of the most important recurring themes throughout The Book Thief was Liesel’s relationships with all of the people in her life. She grows close with several different people, and trusts, loves, and cares for them all differently but equally. Three of those relationships will be explored more deeply; Liesel’s relationship with her foster father, Hans Hubermann, the Jewish man her family takes in, Max Vanderburg, and her best friend, Rudy Steiner. Liesel’s relationship with Hans is one of the most important, if not the most important, relationships in the novel. Hans is the first person Liesel trusts, and the person who stays with her and loves her until the end.
Her favorite thing to do with the stolen books was read with her father. Her Papa frequently read with her. “ ‘ Do you want to read it?’ Again, ‘Yes Papa’ “ (Zusak 64). One of Liesel’s friends, Max, is constantly filled with guilt as well.
