Every character no matter if its a side character or if its a main characters play an important role in the story because every character helps convey the author’s story or point of view. Every character in “The Book Thief” is compelling in there own but arguably Liesel Meminger is found to be the most compelling. Some people may find Liesel the most compelling because of her personality and her attitude towards certain things. Others may find her interesting because they can relate to some of her situations like being a foster child, losing a sibling, needing extra help with certain subjects, struggling financially, and having parents that constantly fight. There are two types of conflict: internal and external. Liesel mostly deals with internal conflict which are decisions needed to be made within the character, often abstract and dealing with the conscience. One example of internal conflict that Liesel faced was found on page 101 and it states “Against all hopelessness, these are still checking the mailbox each afternoon, to our March and well into April.” This quote shows that even After Liesel’s realization that her mom will not write her back she still continues tracking the mailbox showing that one part of her was hopeless while the other one was hopeful. This is an example of internal conflict because it shows a problem that is happening inside of Liesel’s mind. Another quote that shows Liesel’s attitude toward her past which is found on page 119 “‘Three books.’ Liesel spoke softly and she looked at the backs of the men”. This quote shows Liesel fighting with herself trying to decide whether or not to take a book from the fire. Once again a part of her is telling her not to take the book while the other part is telling her to take it. These examples of conflict show why Lieselk in a sense of her opinions and her problems while when characterizing Liesel we learn about her personality or in other words what she is like on the
