Throughout the class so far, multiple articles pertaining to the human condition and life have been read and analyzed. These articles go under the saying “Life Almost Straight”, and an interpretation of this saying is that life isn’t a straight path towards a goal. In fact, it’s like a curvy back road with pleasures, rough spots, and hope. The author of the article “College should be an adventure” expresses his five suggestions about how to make college days seem like an adventure. One of his points say to put in a lot of effort as he states that college is, “...an extended adventure requiring a dose of hard work and effort combined with flexibility and an open mind,” (Roush). He means in his statement to expect hard work and loads of effort to be put into a college education. It states, “We need the humanities not because they will produce shrewder entrepreneurs or kinder C.E.O.s but because...they help us enjoy life more and endure it better,” (Gopnik). This means that though the humanities have no purpose they are a pleasure that has a journey, like life, more enjoyable. A human condition is to seek pleasures and rewards after facing hard times. This relates to the interpretation of “Life Almost Straight” because on a curvy back road after facing the rough spots, there are sure to be beautiful sights and tourists attractions that people take pleasure out of seeing. So, the road toward their destination is stalled by these pleasures in order to enjoy the journey of life more.
