Picture the world you knew all your life falling apart slowly right in front of your untouched eyes, natural disasters, one after the other, death, disease, famine, so much more. All of this is perfectly portrayed in Life as We Knew It, a realistic fiction novel written by Susan Beth Pfeffer. This book is the diary of a teenage girl named Miranda, which follows her along with her family as they try to survive the natural disasters caused by the Moon getting hit out of orbit by an asteroid. Along with the natural disasters, Miranda and her family also have to deal with the greed of other humans, diseases, the lack of food, and at times each other. The theme of Life as We Knew It is that love will get you through the toughest times because it is always better to work in a group, love gives people reason to live, and love can get people to do crazy things. First of all, working by alone never gets anyone as far as if they were too work in a group, "Thanks, kids. I never could have done this without you." (Pfeffer 54). Mom is surprised because Miranda kept the rest of the family alive through their darkest hour almost single-handedly. This is even more impressive due to the fact that nearly everyone in their town was wiped out by the flu, but Miranda still managed to keep everyone alive.
