It had begun on Saturday 7th September. The blitz was the Germans attempt to destroy Britain and moral. The Luftwaffe began its bombing campaign in London and then other British cities such as Liverpool, Cardiff, Newcastle, Glasgow and Coventry. All of these countries were bombed very heavily by the Germans. The people who experienced the blitz had to take refuge in their Anderson shelters and demanded that the underground stations to be opened at night to provide them further safety, on the first 9 hours of the bombing, 448 Londoners were found dead after 600 tonnes of high explosives were dropped on the docks and in East End of London. The source gives a quote that ‘’ 449 German bombers dropped, 1,400 high explosive bombs and 100,000 incendiary bombs on were killed are around 1000 were injured. To protect people from this horrible bombing, people had worn gas masks and had blackouts. Gas masks would protect people from dying from all the gas that would have been dropped in the streets. This is because people would inhale the all the fumes then cause them to die. The gas masks were issued in 1939. For babies they would get designed different ones due to them being small. The black outs would help people because the Germans would not know where to bomb, as for if the lights were on then the bombers would bomb there knowing that someone is there. It would make them more at risk. The blackout means that all lights must be off by certain times. It includes houselights, streetlight and car lights. Source A1 would be useful to someone learning about the blitz because it was from a channel 4 website which was set up to support its television programme in
