Life Imprisonment without Parole as an Alternative to Capital Punishment Capital punishments have been reducing over the past few years. Advocates for this type of punishment argue that it causes general and specific deterrence. They also argue that it causes the closure to the victim’s family. However, recent studies indicate that capital punishment does none of this. The countries using capital punishment should shift due to several reasons. As the person serves life imprisonment, other members of public will deter from committing similar crimes due to the severity of the punishment (Li, 2010). This is because human beings are social beings and denial of total freedom is one of the worst punishments that can be administered to them. Based on specific deterrence, life imprisonment without parole deters the individual from committing any more crimes as he is deprived of his freedom to go back to the society. Life imprisonment without parole also aids in retribution. This means that vengeance is administered on the law breaker which is proportional to the crime he/she committed. In the case of a murderer, imprisoning him/her for life will serve as a perfect revenge against his inhumane acts (Li, 2010). As he serves his life imprisonment, that individual can be reformed as in the process he gets to learn his mistakes and the severity of the punishment. In some instances, the prisoners are released after serving a number of years in prison based on whether they have reformed or not. After release from prison, they can go back to the society and become responsible citizens while still acting as an example for other citizens to deter from such
