Christopher was an Italian navigator who sailed in the service of Spain. He is well-known as the founder of the New World, America. Columbus was searching for a westward route towards Asia by sea. Although Columbus failed to find the route, his discoveries along the way were much more valuable.
It was October 12, 1492 when Christopher Columbus arrived in the new world and it is also the day in which citizens of the United States celebrate this cultivated man. Many see Columbus as the hero that discovered America, but countless people only know that one perspective. Howard Zinn, the author of Columbus, the Indians, and Human Progress deepens the story of Columbus sailing the ocean blue and exhibits a whole different outlook on the events that took place. Zinn’s eloquent depiction spawned interest everywhere due to the graphic and unique portrayal of the so-called 1400’s hero. The author tries to prove (his thesis) the cruelty and immorality of the Italian explorer by giving a commoner’s perspective and clear evidence on how Columbus
Christopher Columbus, said first discoverer of the New World, was credited this title because his personal discovery of the New World was not only lasting and lead to the beginning of exploration and colonization, but he also had documented/published proof or “record” of this new land, which included his journal entries, unlike the explorers before him. However, around 1000 A.D., years and years before Columbus went to new land, a Viking man named Leif Eriksson hit the land of Canada after his father and crew landed in what they named Greenland. “Sagas” or legends let us know that he was indefinitely involved in the true discovery of the New World (Leif Erickkson vs. Christopher Columbus). Poor Richard’s Almanack is a known series of annual calendars published by Benjamin Franklin. It included things such as important dates, statistical information, and tables of tides and astrology.
Columbus was an explorer looking for a safer route to Asia for spices. He lived from 1351-1506, he was born in Italy, he sailed for Spain, and he “found” america and the Caribbeans. He explored to find spices and to find a safe route to the spices, he explored
Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in fourteen hundred ninety-two. When one hears the name Christopher Columbus, they tend to think about his discovery of America. What they don’t consider is how his discovery changed and affected America. First of all, Columbus’ discovery provided the start of a long term colonization, which created what we know today as America. People, who immigrated from another country, traveled all over the world to make it to America in hopes of getting land in “The New World”.
Boo Radley wasn’t always seen in a positive way throughout the book. Throughout the book Boo Radley would rarely come outside. Scout sees Boo in a positive way by the end of the book. Scout found Boo odd in the beginning.
Columbus highlighted the common language and land layouts of the people. He stated, “In the island, which I have said before was called Hispana, there are very lofty and beautiful mountains, great farms, groves and fields, most fertile both for cultivation and for pasturage, and well adapted for constructing buildings.” Columbus first stressed the beauty of the mountains and fields, but then focused on the opportunities the land provided for agriculture and city support. This made the island more desirable for the Spanish to settle in. Columbus also noted the uniformity of language spoken by the inhabitants across the various islands, “a circumstance most favorable for what I believe our most serene King especially desires, that is, their conversion to the holy faith of Christ; for which, indeed, so far as I could understand, they are very ready and prone.”
Christopher Columbus is a man who is commonly depicted as a hero and great explorer who discovered our modern day America, but many of the so called “facts” are not all completely true as people would like to believe. Columbus was undoubtedly a courageous explorer who brought many new ideas, cultures, and resources to be exchanged between the New World and Europe. While this is true, it is not uncommon for people to forget the harmful effects brought along with the voyages made by Columbus and the darker details of his times in America. Columbus started from humble middle class family. Columbus was born in 1451 in the Republic of Genoa as the oldest of his four siblings.
Christopher Columbus was an explorer and navigator born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy. When Christopher Columbus crossed the Atlantic Ocean from Spain in 1492, he hoped to reach eastern Asia. He thought he had reached Asia when he landed on an island in the Caribbean Sea. In fact he had opened up to Europeans a new world with two continents—North America and South America—and many islands.
So, what i gathered from this chapter is that, Europeans are jerks. They thought that they were just God’s gift to the earth. So, I guess when they “discovered” a new world filled with people who didn 't look like them, dress like them, live like them, they must of came to the conclusion that these poor, poor savages needed to be reconditioned to be like them or be wiped from history. Which is basically what Columbus did. Why do we have a holiday named after him?

In 1492 Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue. We all know this catchy tune right? But what we don’t know, is what Columbus thought when he arrived in the North America or what he though of the Native Americans he met. In fact, we don’t know much about all the explorers after Columbus and what they thought. Each explore had their own view of the Native Americans, and three great examples are Columbus, Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda and Bartolomé de Las Casas

Columbus reportedly traded pieces of his ship for gold, and was given a golden mask by a native chief. He later said in court (believing he had reached India) “There are many spices, and great mines of gold and other metals…”. After learning of the untapped natural resources and potential for wealth, European nations created an exploration frenzy, with constant voyages to the new world. The nations which sponsored these expeditions would give the explorers a cut of all the gold they found, which helped motivate conquistadors to make the long and treacherous journey to the New World. These explorers knew gold would bring wealth and power to them and their country, in addition to achieving tremendous glory for both.
