In today 's news, two Texas high school football athletes made headlines following the ambush of an official during a pivotal moment of the game. Allegedly, the official provoked the two by using racial slurs and attempted to give the opponents the advantage due to his dislike for the opposing team. The two high school players who were involved, were reportedly ordered by their assistant coach to take action after the coach had he felt he and the team were being discriminated against. I will never forget that moment, when I caught the ball I took off, I juked to the left causing my other teammate to fall then I hit a spin move and cause another teammate to miss, I then ran for the touchdown. Football is America’s favorite sport. American citizens spend their Sunday nights glued to the television, and Friday nights at the stadium watching athletes tackle, run and catch. Some viewers believe that football is too dangerous and should be eliminated from high school. Football is a dangerous sport; however, it should not be eliminated from high schools, because that tactic would be too severe. There are other ways of decreasing the dangers of football.
On a cold, frosty, snow cover night in November at Welcome Home Stadium, was when my life changed. That night, two teams played for the chance to call themselves champions of 6th-grade football. All game, my team and I battled against the mighty Wilmington Hurricanes. We fought all game to win and finally we got the ball back with less than under a minute left and down by 4 points. The crowd was quieter than a church mouse as my coaches huddled us up during a timeout, and in that timeout, my coaches looked to me for answers.
I have become more determined which is one of my strengths. What I have done to stay more focused is make a list of my priorities that I need to stay on task with. The Thursday night lights beamed down on me as kickoff approached. It was the last game of the 8th grade football season and the last chance to make my mark on a personally rather ordinary season. We were playing Celina, a team known to be a powerful opponent. I was on the kickoff return team, playing on the far left side of the field and on that particular night we were set to receive the kick. The referee’s whistle pierced the warm and soundless autumn air.
When I partially tore my ACL I had to show grit not to give up playing football. It was during warmups for a football game in 7th grade. The offense was all lined up with me as an outside receivor with Derrick on the inside. When Nick hiked the ball I raced to the cornerback ,who happened to be Ethan Goodwin, and started blocking him. Then the whistle blew so I looked over at Nick to see what happened and realized that that he had just thrown the ball.
One leadership experience I had was through my athletics at my high school. Every year, our high school volleyball program hosts a camp for young girls to come learn and develop her volleyball skills, as well as do arts and crafts and make new friends. As a varsity player, we all were assigned a different group of girls to be in charge of. We also were given a junior varsity player to help us. I became a leader in this area because I was more experinced and organized.
Showing grit is a common thing for all people in sports, but one that has really stuck to me was middle school football to now. When seventh grade football started, Coach was looking at kids for certain positions and he said my name first. I instantly perked up ready to get any position on the team, but when he said I was playing second team center I was crushed. I never played on the line before. I was tall and skinny, not big and bulky.
I said, “ I know that, and I want to be on the field”. So I finally moved to wide receiver,WR, and could finally play safety. Coach Minnich would come to me in practice and just say,” Couldn’t do this playing quarterback”.
The Dangers of High School Football Just as it does with American sports fans and on the big screen, football reigns supreme in high school sports as well. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, nearly 1.1 million American boys played on an 11-player high school squad, compared to just 575,628 athletes who ran the track and 535,289 who played basketball (Miller). Despite the growing number of participants, high school football has also proven to be the most dangerous out of all high school activities. High school football has the highest death rate of school sports and also holds the spot for the most concussions and long term injuries.
How there is no I in team no matter what kind of team that may be. Soccer also made me a more physically strong person because I play defense I just won’t accept someone scoring in my goal. Every time I step onto a soccer field I feel strong and proud not only for me but for my team as well because we all have put our blood sweet and tears into this sport to go as far as we have. With this year being my senior year of high school I hope we can go all the way and win the championship this year. The most important lesson I learned from soccer is how you get what you work for, if you cut corner during practice then be prepared to play those who might have not cut corners and for them to be in better
The winter season was upon us. Snow fell, christmas decorations were up, and our spirits were high. My brother, Milan, and I loved the holiday season. Spending time with our family, opening gifts, playing in the snow; it was all like a dream come true. Every year we made our own wish lists, decorating them in green and red stickers.
