Firstly, Pi’s loss of innocence can be seen in his devoted conviction. At the beginning of the novel, Pi may be a sincere follower of three very different religions: Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam.
Pi continues his journey by learning how to live in a small space with these animals and even training one of them. In the end Pi reveals another story with people replacing the animals that were on the lifeboat before. Pi had initially used animals which best represented the people who were really in the boat. This showed how throughout the story, since these people were put into a life threatening situation, they had revealed a more primal side. Life of Pi is accompanied with various symbols, with each
“Sanctify them by truth; your word is your truth” (John 17:17). This verse relates to Life of Pi, as it signifies the meaning of the work as whole. Good morning. Discoveries that challenge original perceptions stimulate new and re-evaluated ideas and values which are confronting and provocative since they expose us to different environments. Today I will be arguing that both Ang Lee’s Life of Pi and Robert Gray’s Flames and Dangling Wire significantly support this idea. In Life of Pi, Lee explores the impact of experiences of hardship to lead to new and renewed discoveries of self and spirituality through the character of Pi. Similarly, Flames and Dangling Wire demonstrates the effect of misfortunes to lead to transformative self-discoveries.

In particular, water and the carnivorous island were two important symbols that represented the theme of spirituality in Life of Pi.
Charles Darwin, an English naturalist and geologist who was best known for his contributions to science during the mid-1800s, theorized that over time individual species among varying habitats experience a cycle of genetic mutations. These cycles of genetic mutations caused a change and variation within a population of species through “survival of the fittest” - leading to the inevitable struggle to exist. Within the struggle to exist, those that were able to defy their odds and withstand the variable climates outlived those that were unable to and went on to produce more like-minded offspring that were equipped with a successful variation of genes. These like-minded offspring inherited traits that helped them to evolve, survive, reproduce, and supply even more successful traits for future generations to come. Then, as new genetic modifications surfaced over time as a byproduct of an ever-changing environment, they were selectively chosen and either added to or used to replace previous successful variations - this chain of events is known as a “natural selection”.
The theme in Life of Pi is without a doubt the hardships in order to survive. The whole novel is about enduring pain, hardships, starvation, dehydration and more. I believe the author wrote this novel to reveal the hardships one has to proceed through in order to keep living. Pi certainly shows how quick life can change from ordinary to a long lasting nightmare. Surely this can happen to anyone, but not everyone can survive the long lasting nightmare.
