Discovery is a transformative process that often result in a variety of outcomes. One of the many outcomes of discovery is personal growth. The film ‘Life of Pi’ directed by Ang Lee and the picture book ‘Journey’ by Aaron Becker both explore how discoveries will result in a renewed perception of ourselves and a deeper understanding of a broader society. Both composers have portrayed this idea through a diverse range of techniques.
Discoveries are continuous and often contribute to an individual’s renewed perception of themselves. At the start of the picture book, the dark grey hue of the setting reflects the main character’s emotions of society. Every person she approaches at the start of the book did not bother to look at her, this symbolises how much she is excluded from her current world. However, when she enters the magical realm of her imagination, the bright colourful hue is reflective of the fact that she is accepted by this world. Each character during the journey gave her eye contact which shows the acceptance they have for her. She gains a deeper understanding of her world, the audience is able to identify this when she returns to her world. The bright green traffic light symbolises how she has understood more of her world, and that she can proceed with her life with the company of her new friends. Hence, Becker has allowed the audience to understand how discoveries can result in a deeper understand of the world and herself.
The film ‘Life of Pi’ by Ang Lee and the picture book ‘Journey’ by Aaron Becker has offered the audience an understanding of how discoveries will result in a renewed perception of ourselves and lead us to a deeper understanding of the world. Both texts have conveyed to the audience that discoveries inevitably lead to personal
