He doesn't understand life.
How can he know himself, yet
To himself be a mystery?
All throughout Life of Pi, characters are seeking to solve the mystery of in the individual and to understand life. The primary seeker for this profound insight is, of course, Pi himself. As an adult Pi studies both science (zoology specifically) and religion at colleges. These interests are both the natural extension of how Pi passed his time while he was a boy: he was the son of a zookeeper but also a devotee of several religions, seeking direct knowledge of God from an early age. When his father decided to move his family from India to Canada, this choice would have stripped many of the traditional answers away from Pi. He was to be exposed to new things and would have to make sense of even more of the world in unfamiliar and unexpected ways. When the Tsimtsum sank, not only was Pi shoved face to face with the unknown, but he also lost his family, the core of his human context. Instead, he had to try to survive. He makes the assumption they are all connected and becomes an adherent of each at the same time, quote “ I next found God in Islam” showing his belief in God doesn’t shift but the way he connects with God and the way God connects with him does. He reexamines life from each faith’s values and teachings. In the poem ‘Rebirth’ it says, “ Every day he reexamines life, questions everything, develops new ideas”. Even though being bewildered by Christianity and the story of the crucifixion and resurrection Pi continues to asks questions of the local priest in an effort to understand life and develop a better understanding of the world around
