Life Of Pi - Quotation Analysis
“I can well imagine an atheist’s last words… and the deathbed leap of faith. Whereas the agnostic, if he stays true to his reasonable self, if he stays beholden to dry, yeastless factuality, might try to explain the warm light bathing him by saying, “Possibly a f-f-failing oxygenation of the b-b-brain,” and, to the very end, lack imagination and miss the better story” (Martel 64).
1. In this quotation, Pi Patel describes the difference between agnostics and atheist. There have been certain times in my life when I believe there could be a god, and times when I don’t. For this reason, I consider myself agnostic. This quotation speaks to me as Pi actually explains it is better to be atheist then agnostic. He reasons that at least atheists have faith in something bigger than themselves, like math or science, but agnostics are left pledging allegiance to none. After reading this quote, I believe that I should either choose to believe in god, or choose to believe in not believing like atheists do. Religion is something everyone has dealt with in their lives. Whether someone is an atheist or christian, they still had to make that decision by evaluating their options. I grew up in family that I consider “seasonally religious”. By this I mean, my family would go to church on christmas, easter, and maybe the odd sunday. I never really thought much about religion, I figured going to church was something every family did. It wasn’t until I was older and started learning about religion at catholic school that I became aware of what it really was.
