“Don’t be discouraged it’s often the last key in the bunch that opens the lock.” When you first heard this quote you probably thought about a chain of keys and a door, I know that’s what I thought of first. Then I thought deeper and realized the deeper meaning of this quote. Whoever said this quote used one of the techniques that Jesus used in his life, parables. A parable is a story that tells of something everybody knows about and has it symbolize a greater meaning. I say that the person used this method because I think that the person isn’t just talking about standing in front of a door on a hot summer day trying every key on your chain to unlock the door. He has witnessed some of the struggles that both his teammates, his players, and even himself have had to face and still go out and play that Sunday. He knows what it’s like to have to practice everyday while keeping up good grades. I tell you this only to show you that he knows some of the difficulties of life, yet he didn’t get bitter at his teachers for giving him homework, nor did he get bitter at his coaches for having him practice everyday. He took those difficulties and became better through them, but he has probably seen many of his teammates and players become bitter at the world because of a difficulty in life. They show the importance of having friends, and being able to trust in someone to have your back no matter what happens. If you don’t have any friends to help you through thick and thin then you will have a hard, depressing, and lonely life. Friends are people that listen to your problems, give you advice, hang out with you, and make you laugh; now it’s your job to do the same for them otherwise you are abusing the friendship because friendship is a two way street. I can not imagine a life where I’m alone with no family; no friends, no community, no classmates, or no teammates. If I had to be taken from my life and put in my life like that I don’t know what I do, but do anything in my power to get back to human contact. In some of Melville’s books he wrote about a boat that crashes onto a deserted island, so I believe when he was writing this book through the character's eyes it opened him up to a world without people. Once his eyes were opened he knew how important friends and family were, and that was what inspired him to say, “We cannot live for ourselves alone. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men.” I believe that the man that he had stranded on an island made him want to spread the importance of friends
