Ewing had been convicted of both burglary and robbery approximately seven years before the crime that gave rise to this appeal. When he stole the golf clubs, he was still on parole following his release from prison related to those two felony convictions. Following his conviction in this case, the trial judge declined to exercise discretion and convict Ewing of a misdemeanor only, as he was allowed but not required to do under California law. After determining that Ewing should be punished for a felony offense, the trial judge applied California’s “three strikes" law, where a criminal defendant must be sentenced indeterminate life sentence, which in this case was twenty-five years to life. Cheating death was a hard thing and only some actually survived. There are little survivor of people who actually cheated death. Some of these people were sent to many concentration camps or either forced labor but they survived. As an example of cheating death is a book called Prisoner B 3087.
The article “Life Sentences”, Christopher Shea describes various statements which I strongly agree with and have a strong position towards, such as the difficulties ex-convicts go through in attempting to find a living for themselves after prison and the amount of money America invests in prison. Life In Prison by Reilly was an exceptional read and the information was fairly recent while the last year he was a correctional officer in 2007. Reilly has been a correctional officer for a little over 6 years and while in those six years he has worked at two different prisons; a prison in Pennsylvania and Maine State Prison. Since these were both high security prisons, these offenders ranged from 20-65 years old, some older than that, race varied but predominantly black, both of these prisons had well over 900 inmates that includes around 800 males and over 100 females. These crimes that inmates committed were all felonies, with ranging from drug distribution to murderers. The next book is Inside: Life Behind Bars In America by Santos.
How would you feel if you were on death row awaiting the inevitable? Would you feel as though you are deserving of this punishment or deserve the chance to live? As of January 1st, 2018 over 2,700 inmates are on death row. This means that they will be put to death at some point in the future. Many inmates are often on death row for more than a year which gives them time to reflect on what they have done and the pain it caused.
Brief Summary Staples speaks of his experiences being a six foot tall, young, African American male in a city filled with poverty and crime. He had never truly been exposed to the stereotypes and discrimination in his younger days, of course he knew of it, but he never truly experienced it. When he was twenty-two years old, he was out walking at night due to a bad case of insomnia. Apparently, he was following a little too uncomfortably close to a white woman and she felt endangered. She began to run from him in a defense mechanism, opening his eyes to the discrimination he was born into.
There are many people who commit crimes all over the world with no intention of leaving their life rebellious life. A lot of convicts only desire to do their time with the hopes of getting sentence cut down by being well behaved, however, criminals who are sentenced to the death penalty, such as Pete McKenzie, desire life and freedom, so they resort to anything that they can do in order to be free including murder and attempted escape. It is difficult for some convicts to change their ways and in certain cases, some of them never do, even with the years they spend in prison. Criminals like Pete McKenzie can’t leave the life of crime and continue to commit crimes in prison.
Being released from prison, there is a point when a parole board can take freedom away. Many individuals control prisoners’ release, parole boards decide if they are at low enough risk to reenter society. Some prisoners must complete a program for release, but rehabilitation programs are so far behind, causing prisoners to never be eligible for release. Of the inmates that qualify for release, only 12% have been considered. Looking at the OLRs; only two prisoners in the last 17 years released on parole.
A kid is a kid until the age of eighteen, then in the eyes of the law they are legally an adult. So why do the court systems trial a juvenile as an adult at the age of thirteen or fourteen? Mistakes are made and when the courts put kids behind bars for a life sentence and are not giving them the chance to change. To these juveniles, being sentenced to life is a slap in the face says to them that they will never have the chance of fixing or learning from that mistake that they have made. That they have to face a life sentence and have that burden on them forever.
Angela Davis mentioned it I had not thought about life without the possibly of parole as a second death sentence. However, she is right because either way the person dies in prison. Also, she talked about how African American males are incarcerated more than any other group of people, but the incarceration rate for women is increasing. Dr. Davis wants an end to incarceration as we know it, which I completely agree with; however, not having a prison system is not the answer in my opinion.
I also believe that the death penalty can offer an easy way out for some offenders, which is not right. I believe that life without parole creates an even stronger example of the inmate when they receive life sentences that are very long. Some families have to live the rest of their lives without their loved ones because of the offenders actions and I think the offender should have to think about those actions for a long time to
Although, for criminals, I do believe that life in prison without parole would be more effective and more appropriate because they will have to suffer slower; they get to think of what they have done and only have the thoughts in their head to keep them busy. Speaking of me though, I would not be able to handle being in solitary for fifteen years let alone for my life. I would gather severe mental illnesses, my physical well being would deteriorate and I would not know how to function as a proper human
Why the prison system is flawed The american prison system is flawed and should be changed because it is very expensive to keep it running the way it is, the prison system is helping gangs grow and it can be fixed it is possible. I believe that it needs to change so that cities will have more tax money to fix other things and the people who don't deserve to get released won't be. The prison system is very expensive for taxpayers because they have to pay to employ the officers, they have to pay for the building, the tools, the food for them to eat, there clothing and bedding.

Examining Problems and Their Solutions in The Parole System The United States of America contains the third largest population in the world, which contradicts the fact that the United States has the largest prison population in the world (Aliprandini, and Finley). The fact that their prison population is so large alludes to the reason they would have a strong parole system. Due to contrary belief, this is not the case.
