A great moment in “Hardware is on stanzas 4-6 which says, “set screw and rasp, ratchet wrench, band saw, and ball pen hammer.”
The Bronze Screen introduced both positive and negative portrayals of Latinas and Latinos in film. While there are plenty of positive Latino roles in films, Latinos and Latinas should be included in more positive roles because the negative roles Latinos have in films cause negative stereotypes. Positive and negative representations of Latinos in films has always fluctuated throughout history, however the more negative ones seem to always overpower the good ones. The film, “The Bronze Screen”, gave many examples of the negative roles Latinos played in films throughout film history. Early films included Latino actors, however they did not always have a lead role or even a positive one.
The lighting in Donnie Darko movie is a key component of composition which creates our sense of illuminating for people and things. This movie uses two sources of lighting; natural light, such as daylight, when the scene is in an outdoor area for example, walking from school, at home, waiting at bus stop, or playing outside of the school on sunny days. Another source of light is artificial spotlight which is used in the movie indoors to cut and shape the light at the dining table, in the classroom or in the psychotherapist's house. Also, distinct shadows are used as an essentially smooth surface that reflects hard light in the Halloween party to feature deep shadows and scary areas in function of the plot. The use of background light was an important focus in this picture, there was less attention to lighting the actors faces but in almost every frame there is well placed background light often combined with a moving light source. Repetition was also evident within the visual composition of the frame, the actors were rarely positioned within the center of the frame but always to the left or the right with a light source covering them from behind. These elements are clearly depicted in the film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring directed by Peter Jackson. Lighting used in film is lit in certain ways in order to enhance mood, atmosphere and drama. This lighting suggests depth, illuminates and enriches the story.
After viewing Moonlight, which was personally my favorite film of the year, I choose to analyze the scene when Blue takes Chiron to the ocean and teaches him to swim (17:20-19:30). This scene first drew my attention because of Blue’s character. The dynamic of a crack dealer with a heart-of-gold has this duality about it where my heart tells me to love him as a person, but my head tells me that this person is Chiron’s mother’s dealer, and I should despise him for it. Yet, when I watch this scene I can’t help but think of how much I love Blue as a character. He is able to fill in for the role of a father figure, and teach Chiron about life.
Zoe Wicomb’s novel, Playing in the Light (2006), is set in the 1990s in Cape Town, South Africa, post apartheid. The novel revolves around Marion, the protagonist, and her intricate relationship with Brenda, the first person of color she has ever employed at her travel agency business. This post apartheid novel offers interesting and an insightful viewpoint of South Africa following the fall of apartheid. By analyzing the passages in this novel, one will be able to better understand race in the context of South Africa.
