Brandon Ni 5/8/18 2nd Period Lincoln Movie and Ratification of 13th Amendment The 13th Amendment is the abolishment of involuntary labor and slavery except as punishment for commiting a crime. It freed all slaves and servants in America and eventually lead to colored people voting, and the end of segregation. It also inspired other countries to banish slavery too. Lincoln and the whole north was struggling to pass the amendment due to the lack of northern representatives voting for the amendment. This was all happening while the Union army was at war with the Confederates. The people deciding if the amendment would be passed is the House of Representatives. Uniforms and guns were pumping out of factories to help the war effort for the North while the South only had farms and slaves to help the war effort. One major battle was The Battle of Shiloh, The Union was led by Ulysses S. Grant. Many men died but the Union came out victorious. Another battle that helped the North win was The Battle Of Antietam. The Union forces defended the border states from an aggressive push attempt. The Union was led by George McClellan. The Confederate army was forced to retreat. The Emancipation Proclamation freed many slaves in the south and also lowered the South’s will to fight on. The Confederate forces were surprisingly being defeated. The North’s economy was booming due to factories. The North had twice as much soldiers as the Confederates. Many were colored people who were willing to fight for rights. The South were outnumbered but the soldiers were willing to fight for slavery because many thought the South would lose all of its power and collapse because without slaves, no work could be done to help agriculture. Luckily politicians could be bribed to vote for something. So Lincoln’s cabinet did just that, they convinced many Democrats to vote for the 13th Amendment and forbid slavery in every state.
