The first military battle that tested Lincoln was commenced in April of 1861. During this time General Pierre G.T de Beauregard fired upon Fort Sumter in South Carolina were "for the second time in American history it was a shot heard around the world" (McPherson EBook Pg. 21). Upon the news, Lincoln was forced to construct an army almost out of thin air. This was Lincoln's first call to action, however he sat back and calculated his next step instead of charging. According to McPherson Lincoln was "not a quick study, but a thorough on". (McPherson Ebook Pg. 2- Introduction). This was an unnerving step to the generals, but proved to be one of great circumstance to Lincoln's military strategies. As Lincoln continued to run the office, he realized that the senior staff and leaders did not have the knowhow to surpass the soon to be called Confederate rebellion, so yet again he took a new form of action. McPherson states the Battle of Nashville was an "even more decisive victory than Sheridan's at Cedar Creek" (McPherson EBook pg. 253). With the overtaking of Georgia, Sherman was able to scatter the Confederate soldiers stationed there as well as obtain "150 heavy guns and plenty of ammunition and also about 25,000 bales of cotton" (McPherson EBook Pg. 253). With this as well as the victory over South Carolina, many of the supplies need by the Union army was coming from these states which greatly impacted the success of the Union Army during (Chapter 10- " No Peace Without Victory").
