There were two beliefs on the inclusion of African Americans into the American society following the Civil War. President Lincoln wanted a slow and well planned introduction of free African Americans into the United States society, Pennsylvania Representative Thaddeus stevens argued that African Americans should be offered many freedoms and rights immediately.

“Whatever you are, be a good one.” President Abraham Lincoln was just that, an inspiring President. In the Nineteenth Century, Lincoln along with Congress worked to pass the Thirteenth Amendment. His words clearly state his intentions of binding the nation and creating equality. Towards the end of the movie, Lincoln, President Lincoln gave his speech. In order to keep all the races happy, Lincoln had to use a catch twenty-two in order to get the outcome he wanted. He remarks this to secretary of state, William Seward that “The restoration of the Rebel States to the union must rest upon the principle of civil and political equality of both races; and it must be sealed by general amnesty” said Lincoln. He wanted to stand up for the underprivileged, in this case, African Americans. He was a good person in the situation, almost a hero. During the movie, Lincoln, he was a consistent man. He had done multiple things to help the amendment along. He worked his way around the representatives in order to continue with the vote. When Lincoln was posed with the questions about Peace Commissioners coming to the city of Washington, he remarked, “So far as I know, there are no peace commissioners in the city, nor are there likely to be”. Lincoln had met with the Peace Commissioners despite what his’ cabinet said. This is shown through the movie when Lincoln had a meeting and discussed peace with them.
