What does the term “American” mean? The sources that I will be using to prove my point includes the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson, JFK’s Inaugural Address by John F. Kennedy, Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address by Abraham Lincoln and “I, Racist” by John Metta. The term “American” means having freedom, rights, privileges, and different views or opinion about racism. America is based on immigrants. The people who are included are the people who are naturally born in the country and an American citizen. The people who are excluded are the people who are undocumented immigrants and not an American citizen and just migrate into the country.

Lincoln addressed on his Inauguration that the people can save the Union without war. They can work together for the peace of the country. The citizens of America have the privilege to work for themselves and for their family. They have the privilege to study for their future. They also have the privilege to fight for their goods. They have the right to fight if it’s for the sake of the country and for themselves. These privileges should be used in a good way that the government will trust and believe them. Lincoln says, “With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan—to do all which may achieve and cherish a just, and a lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations” (Abraham Lincoln Second Inaugural Address). Lincoln says that the people should work together and use their right that God has given to them. They should use their right to finish the works they began and put the nation all together with peace. They should also care the people who fought for the country and for their families. Most people do not mind what race people belong to. They say that all people are created equal. But in America, there are different groups of people who do not have the same views about racism. John Metta says, “White people and Black people are not having a discussion about race. Black people, thinking as a group, are talking about living in a racist system. White people, thinking as individuals, refuse to talk about “I, Racist” and instead protect their own individual and personal goodness. In doing so, they reject the existence of racism” (Race: “I Racist”). Metta says that the people living in America, even if they have different races like the White and Black people have no discussion about their race.
