Plagiarism is a very serious crime; it is important that you know what plagiarism is as well as what the consequences of plagiarism are and the types of plagiarism. This way, you won’t unintentionally plagiarize in your work. In this essay I will write about and explain, what plagiarism is, the types of plagiarism and list some of the consequences of plagiarizing in a paper. I will also explain how to prevent plagiarizing in your work.
You may ask ‘what is plagiarism?’ According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary plagiarism is “to use the words or ideas of another person as if they were your own words or ideas”. There are six types of plagiarism: complete, direct, paraphrased, mosaic, lazy and self plagiarism (source Purdue Cal. Univ. for Types of plagiarism). Direct plagiarism is using the exact wording of the author without using quotation marks and/or using an in-text citation of the quote. Thirdly, if you would restate an author’s analysis or conclusion without citing the source this would be an example of paraphrased plagiarism. Next is mosaic plagiarism, this is when someone uses the multiple source ideas including, but not limited to the author’s phrases, paragraphs and ideas. Then, the writer would combine those ideas into sentences and paragraphs without careful confirmation of the sources. The fifth type of plagiarism is, what some people call lazy plagiarism is using a direct quote without directly quoting from the source in your paper.
