For many years, true crime podcasts have become increasingly popular. It has become the top-ranked genre downloaded compared to any other podcast genre. True crime is popular for a multitude of reasons. One of them is due to the fact that it tends to be puzzling to listen to, something you have to focus your full attention on, and it can spark adrenaline in a person. While we are listening to true crime podcasts, it raises awareness to see the signs of these dangerous situations, but often our enjoyment of these can overshadow the impact these crimes have on the victims and their families. Studies have shown that true crime carries an educational component by raising awareness of these situations. Olivia Hayes. Especially since the majority of people who listen to true crime are women, and the majority of victims of these tragic events are women. It helps us know the dangers and helps us be cautious and not let our guard down, especially in situations where the circumstances aren’t the safest. Even if you are in these tough situations, watching or listening to true crime can help reduce your anxiety during these fight or flight moments and instead gather information (Kaja Perina). Another thing as well is that true crime helps people understand the justice system. Many people don’t realize how complex and corrupt sometimes the justice system can get, and I think that by listening to true crime, it can truly help a person understand in-depth what goes on in a courtroom and the processes of incarcerating someone. It can cause things like a rapid heartbeat, or you can have trouble sleeping more at night, and just overall tension and being too wary of others. It can drastically take a toll on your mental health and well-being, so it’s important to take breaks from it and watch something more lighthearted for a bit. In addition, it’s equally important to realize that, as we find enjoyment in these topics, we’re often forgetting that there are real victims and the families of the victims who went through pain, grief, and suffering. Friends and families who haven’t received justice continuously keep reliving the trauma of what was done to someone they love and cherish. At times, you should stop and wonder if it’s morally right to find entertainment in these stories, treating them like every other show. When you put yourself in the shoes of the victims' families, you wouldn’t want people to treat it like a puzzle piece or something they can simply work
